SBA police have confirmed that a dog rescued from cliffs in the Zapalo area last Saturday has now been handed over to Hope for Homeless, a Nicosia-based dog welfare organization.

A day-long joint operation between the police and Defense Department firefighters was launched after the stranded dog was seen by a hiker on the edge of the cliffs.

With an obvious threat to the animal’s life, police inspector Lakis Hadjichristodoulou explained how the rescue mission went.

He said, “The dog could not be seen, but her howling could be heard, so we called the SBA Police Marine Unit to find the dog’s exact location.”

While helicopter crews from RAF Akrotiri were on standby, Defense Fire Department personnel climbed up the cliff using ropes to reach the obviously trembling dog.

DFR Area Manager, Jim Gray, who saw his Episkopi team perform the rescue, said, “This was a very challenging situation due to the dog’s location, but fortunately we are trained for this type of situation and we are glad the story now has a happy ending.”

After Neophytos Neophytou, a member of the Cyprus Animal Party, was given fresh food and water at the SBA police station in Akrotiri and with no owner in sight, he picked up the dog and turned her over to “Hope for Homeless.

Neophytou spoke at the station Wednesday and was quick to express his gratitude to the bases.

He said, “A big thank you to the authorities of the British bases, SBA police, naval unit and defense fire rescue, for their superhuman efforts and risking their own lives to save this soul.

“The lucky female will be adopted by Hope for Homeless, who will find a loving forever home for her.”
